7/11/06 - Where did I go wrong?

OK, so this pay I was planning on having at least 2 vege meals a week (we have been a bit slack on these recently) - number one was to be the yumminess that is Sour Chickpeas BUT my chickpeas WOULDN'T cook - I presoaked and then simmered the jolly things for HOURS (about 4!) and they never went past about halfway cooked?? And they were two different colours? I mean..what the...??
Anyway, this pic was taken the next morning before I threw them in the bin - (they weren't even cooked enough to feed the dogs and too naughty to have the priviledge of being composted).
What I want to know is how to avoid this next time? How do you know you have good chickpeas?

How long did you have those chickpeas? Is it possible where you bought them kept them around too long? I'd guess they were just too old, although I've read they can be stored almost indefinitely.
Also, did you add anything like salt or baking soda? This can make them take longer to cook.
Sour chickpeas though? What are those? They sound interesting.
Yes its really yummy - I should blog the recipe like you do!
Someone else asked if they had been heat treated - I don't know as they came out of bins at our local Indian supermarket (I thought it would be a good place to buy them). I must admit they did look more dried up than I remember them being usually, maybe they were just old.
